-The Two Sides Of Christmas-

There are two sides to Christmas in America. The origin of the Christmas celebration is the birth of Jesus Christ. Christians believe that God sent His son, Jesus, to earth to save all people from their sins. So people celebrate his arrival on earth on Christmas day.

The custom of gift giving came from example of the Kings of the East who visited the baby Jesus to honor Him with royal gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Santa Claus is a more recent tradition which began in Holland and spread around the world. Children believe that Santa Clause (with the help of elves and flying reindeer) flies around the world putting gifts under the Christmas trees for the boys and girls who have been good that year. If the children were bad, Santa would not give them a nice gift, only a small piece of coal.

American children all love to write notes to Santa telling him what they want for Christmas and they are all careful to remember to leave out cookies and milk next to their Christmas tree for Santa to eat when he visits their house.

アメリカには、２面のクリスマスがあります。クリスマスのお祝いの起源は、イエスキリストの誕生です。クリスチャンの人たちは、すべての人々を罪から救うために、神が彼の息子であるイエスを地上に送ったということを信じています。だから人々は、クリスマスの日にイエスが地上に降りたお祝いをします。
プレゼントをあげる習慣は、黄金や、乳香、没薬の王室の贈り物を授けるために、赤ちゃんであるイエスを訪れた東の王たちの事例から来ています。
サンタクロースは、オランダで始まった、もっと最近の伝統で、世界中に広がりました。子供たちは、サンタが、その年よい子だった男の子と女の子に、クリスマスツリーの下にプレゼントを置きながら世界中を飛び回っていると信じています。もしその子供たちが悪い子なら、サンタはいいプレゼントはあげないで、小さな石炭の破片だけをあげるでしょう。
アメリカの子供たちはみんな、サンタに手紙を書くのが好きで、クリスマスに何が欲しいかをサンタに教えます。そして子供たちはみな慎重で、サンタが家に来た時に、食べてもらう様、クリスマスツリーの横にクッキーとミルクを置いておくことを忘れません。
