- The Miranda rights -

In the United States, whenever the police arrest a person, the police officer must read the person their Miranda rights before they ask the person any questions about a suspected crime. This is done to help protect the rights of the accused person, especially if they don’t know what rights they have under the United States Constitution. The Miranda rights include the right to remain silent (not answer questions), the right to speak to an attorney (the government will supply an attorney if the person cannot afford one), and the right to have an attorney present during questioning. After a person has been read their Miranda rights, he or she is said to have been “Mirandized”.Anything a person says after he or she has been mirandized can be used in a court of law. Reading the Miranda rights protects the suspected person’s rights under the law and also protects the police from being sued because the person didn’t know their rights.

Here are the Miranda rights:
You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to speak to an attorney, and to have an attorney present during any questioning. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be provided for you at government expense.

では、ミランダ法則をご紹介：
あなたには、黙秘権があります。
あなたの供述は、法廷であなたに不利な方に使われることもあります。
あなたは弁護士に相談する権利があり、どんな取調べにも弁護士に立ち会ってもらえる権利があります。もし、弁護士を雇えない場合、政府のお金で弁護士（公選弁護士）を与えてもらえる権利があります。

- Valentine’s Day 2 -

Valentine’s Day 2
Children also enjoy participating in Valentine’s Day fun. In the elementary school classrooms, students will make Valentine cards for each other to exchange. They will also make special Valentine’s Day cards for their moms and dads. The children usually use this easy poem in which the second and fourth lines rhyme:

Roses are Red,
Violets are Blue,
Sugar is sweet,
And so are you!

Since there are many words that rhyme with “blue”, it is easy for the children to think of a different ending for the last 2 lines to make the poem even more special for their parents.

Roses are Red,
Violets are Blue,
I really love my mom,
And Daddy, too!

子供達もバレンタインデーへの参加を楽しみます。小学校の教室で、生徒達はお互いに交換する為のカードを作ります。また、お父さん、お母さんへの特別なバレンタインカードも作ります。子供達はたいてい、２行目と４行目に韻を踏むこのような簡単な詩を使います。

ブルーと韻を踏む言葉はたくさんあるので、子供達が、その詩を両親の為にもっと特別なものにする為に、最後の２行に違うエンディングを考えるのは簡単です。

そして、ダディーも！
＊Blueとtooが韻を踏んでいますね。子供達からこのような詩をもらうと思わず笑みがこぼれてしまいます。



＊写真は、バレンタイン様のパッケージになったチョコレートの写真です。このような可愛いものがたくさん売っています。子供達は、カードとこのような小さなパッケージに入ったチョコレート等を、小さな袋に入れて友達や先生に渡します。右の写真が左の袋から取り出した小さなパッケージに入ったものです。よく見ると、それぞれの袋に
I'm yours. Be mine. You're cool. You're cute. Only you. と書かれています。



＊「ビニール袋」のところで学習したtearが、このパッケージにも書かれていました。こういった袋を破くのもtearですね。

- Valentine’s Day 1 -

Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14th. It is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other. Unlike Japan, both men and women give romantic gifts on this special day. Men will often give chocolates or roses with a love poem to their girlfriends or wives, while women like to give Valentine cards (or candy) to their boyfriends or husbands. If the woman is lucky, her boyfriend might pick this day to surprise her with a diamond ring and ask her to marry him.
By the way, in the United States, there is no such thing as White Day. Valentine's Day is for men and women alike to exchange gifts.

-The Two Sides Of Christmas-

There are two sides to Christmas in America. The origin of the Christmas celebration is the birth of Jesus Christ. Christians believe that God sent His son, Jesus, to earth to save all people from their sins. So people celebrate his arrival on earth on Christmas day.

The custom of gift giving came from example of the Kings of the East who visited the baby Jesus to honor Him with royal gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Santa Claus is a more recent tradition which began in Holland and spread around the world. Children believe that Santa Clause (with the help of elves and flying reindeer) flies around the world putting gifts under the Christmas trees for the boys and girls who have been good that year. If the children were bad, Santa would not give them a nice gift, only a small piece of coal.

American children all love to write notes to Santa telling him what they want for Christmas and they are all careful to remember to leave out cookies and milk next to their Christmas tree for Santa to eat when he visits their house.

アメリカの子供たちはみんな、サンタに手紙を書くのが好きで、クリスマスに何が欲しいかをサンタに教えます。そして子供たちはみな慎重で、サンタが家に来た時に、食べてもらう様、クリスマスツリーの横にクッキーとミルクを置いておくことを忘れません。

「犬の糞」の記事より

-Doggy Bag-

In the past, after a big meal at a restaurant, Americans would ask the waiter to bring them a "doggy bag" for the leftover food on their plates. They would then bring the food back home to feed their dogs. However, as the portion size of the food at restaurants became much bigger over the years, people began to bring the food home to eat the next day for lunch - not to give to their dogs. Because of this, Americans no longer ask for a "doggy bag" for their leftovers, rather they ask the waiter to put their food in a box to take home.

昔は、レストランでの大きな（量の多い）食事の後には、アメリカ人はウエイターに、お皿に残った食べ物を持ち帰る為に“ドギーバッグ（食べ残しを持ち帰るための袋）”を頼んだものです。その食べ物を家に持って
帰り、犬に上げたのです。しかし、年々レストランでの一人前の量が大きくなったので、次の日の昼食用に家に持ち帰るようになりました-犬にあげるのではなく。この為、アメリカ人は、残り物用に、もう

＊実際にレストランで食べ残したものを持ち帰る時は、"Can I have a box?"と言うのが一般的

Basically a big meal is just that, a big meal. It is not a comment on the quality of the food, just the amount of food. So, it is more onaka ipai. A big meal can refer to a single portion or what is served to a group of people, it just depends on the context of the situation. Yes, you can also say a small meal if your portion size is small. If you want to talk about the quality of the meal you would be using adjectives such as delicious, tasty, wonderful, fantastic...etc. Feast refers to a big meal served to a large group of people. It can be fancy food or plain food.

-Thanksgiving-
Thanksgiving is a national holiday in the United States. Pilgrims, who moved to the U.S. from England, celebrated the first Thanksgiving in Massachusetts in 1621, after their first harvest. The Pilgrims wanted to express their great gratitude to the Native Americans who taught them how to grow corn and other food. Also, Thanksgiving is a day to give thanks to God for the harvest.

In the United States, we celebrate Thanksgiving day with the family and a feast. A typical Thanksgiving meal includes turkey with gravy, ham, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing, green beans and yams. After a big meal, we have dessert such as pumpkin pie. Yummy!

感謝祭は、アメリカの祝日です。イギリスから移住してきたPilgrimsが１６２１年に、マサチューセッツ州で、初めての収穫の後、最初の感謝祭を行いました。Pilgrimsたちは、とうもろこしや他の食物の栽培の仕方を教えてくれたインディアンの人達への感謝の意を表したかったのです。また、感謝祭は、収穫を神へ感謝する日でもあります。

アメリカでは、家族でご馳走を食べ、感謝祭をお祝いします。典型的な感謝祭の食事として、七面鳥＆グレービー、ハムとマッシュドポテト、クランベリーソース、七面鳥の詰め物、グリーンビーンズ、そして、甘芋があります。

-Smoking in California-

In America, smoking is permitted at the age of 18. However, the number of people in America that smoke has declined significantly as scientific research has proved that smoking is very unhealthy. Lung cancer and high blood pressure are just two of the many health problems linked to smoking cigarettes. Smoking is also very addictive, making it extremely difficult to quit.

Now, especially in California, there are many laws prohibiting smoking in bars, restaurants, parks, beaches and other public places. In fact, smoking has become so rare among Californians that if you see someone smoking in Orange County, you can assume that he or she is probably a foreigner.

「Halloween」の記事より
-Trick or treat-

Halloween is one of the most popular celebrations in America. Ancient people in Europe believed that on one night of the year the souls (ghosts) of dead people could leave their graves and haunt people in villages nearby. People didn't want the ghosts to come into their houses and play tricks on them so they would either leave out treats (food) for ghosts so they would go somewhere else or carve scary faces into pumpkins to frighten away the ghosts. This is how trick-or-treating was started. Children dress up as ghosts and go to people's homes saying, "Trick or treat!". This means either give me a treat or I will play a trick on you. Of course, children don't play tricks on people but the children do get treats such as chocolate or other kinds of candy.

ハロウィンは、アメリカで最も人気のある祝いの一つで、ヨーロッパの古代の人々は、ある晩に死んだ人の魂（幽霊）がお墓から出てきて、近くの村の人々に取りつくと信じていました。人々は、魂（幽霊）が家に入ってきて欲しくなかったし、いたずらをされたくなかったので、幽霊がどこか他へ行くように食べ物を置くか、幽霊を脅して追い立てる為に、かぼちゃに怖い顔を彫ったりしました。これが、trick or treatの始まりです。子供たちは幽霊の様に着飾り、人々の家へ行って"Trick or treat"と言います。これは、お菓子をくれないといたずらしちゃうぞという意味です。もちろん子供たちは、人々にいたずらをしませんが、チョコレートやキャンディの様なお菓子をもらうのです。

"Bimbo" in America refers to a good looking woman who is not very smart.
Ex: Did you see the movie actress on the news last night?
She thinks she is so cute but she couldn't even answer the reporter's question about her new movie. She didn't make any sense. She’s such a bimbo!

アメリカで“Bimbo”とは、あまり賢くない綺麗な女性のことを言います。
例）
昨日の夜の映画女優のニュース見た？彼女って、自分が可愛いって思っているみたいだけど、レポーターの彼女の新しい主演映画についての質問に答えることすらできなかったよね。全然訳わからない回答していたし。彼女って“ビンボー”だよね。
